Cameroon-based biodiversity conservation and sustainable development non-profit organization, Voice of Nature (VoNat) is fine-tuning strategies to ensure a successful commemoration of the 2021 edition of Endangered Species Day and International Day for Biodiversity billed for May 21 and 22, 2021, respectively.
A meeting to better plan for the upcoming environmental days was held in Buea, May 13, 2021. It brought together the management team of the Organization and some four recently recruited volunteers. The meeting culminated in the establishment of an Activity Plan for both Endangered Species Day and International Day for Biodiversity.
Some earmarked activities according to the Activity Plan include; an outreach and media sensitization campaign on the importance of biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability. Storytelling, arts and craft in the form of drawing, environmental songs and poetry also featured on the plan.
At least 50 community kids in the Mount Cameroon area will benefit from environmental educational lessons centered on endangered species in the Mount Cameroon area and their conservation importance, Nature as a solution to human problem and vice versa, and on tree planting techniques and sustainability.
VoNat will also engage community kids and youths in planting trees in public spaces, and in an outdoor activity to identify some biodiversity species in their communities. All these is in consonance with the Organization’s strive for a sustainable and healthy planet for humanity and generations to come.
Celebrated every third Friday of May, Endangered Species Day was instituted by the National Wildlife Federation to raise awareness on the importance of wildlife conservation and restoration efforts for all endangered species. Meanwhile, the International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated May 22 every year, was instituted by the United Nations to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
