Cameroon-based biodiversity conservation and sustainable development non-profit organization, Voice of Nature (VoNat), May 21, 2021 joined the South West Regional Delegation of Environment Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED-SW), the South West Regional Delegation of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF-SW), and other environmental non-profit organizations and student associations in the South West Region in a street-to-street biodiversity conservation campaign.
Jointly organized by MINEPDED-SW and MINFOF-SW to mark the 2021 edition of the International Day for Biodiversity, the environmental actors reached out to hundreds of youths, men and women, educating them about the biodiversity of Cameroon and how they can contribute to solving the problem of biodiversity loss in the country. Using flyers, posters and charts, Buea denizens were implored to fight against pollution through proper waste management, and to plant trees amongst others.
According to the Delegate of MINFOF-SW, Madam Delphine Ikome, the sensitization was necessary “to deter the destruction of biodiversity, and to contribute to the global fight against global warming and climate change”. Her counterpart of MINEPDED-SW, Mr. Set Ekwadi Songue, added that preserving plants, animals and other natural resources for future generations is of great importance.
To the Environmental Education Coordinator of VoNat, Mr. Egbe Philip, it was a great avenue for his organization to fulfill its mission. “We are happy for this opportunity the delegations have given us to engage the population of Buea in finding solutions to the biodiversity conservation challenges of our country. This action aligns with our strive to protect the environment and hand over a healthy planet to the next generation,” he said.
This year’s edition of the International Day for Biodiversity was observed under the theme: “We are Part of the Solution” for nature.
