Some Cameroon-based environmental non-profit organizations, Voice of Nature (VoNat) and Meg Wah (My Earth) and kicking-start the next phase their Ecokids project that will culminate in planting 2000 indigenous tree species at degraded waterways and landscapes in North West and South West regions of Cameroon within the next seven months, with funds from Earth Rising Foundation.
This phase of the project is building on the 2021 session that boosted the zeal of some 120 community kids from communities within the Mount Cameroon Area and Bamenda Highlands of the South West and North West regions of Cameroon respectively, through experiential learning and community sensitization on climate change, and tree planting amongst others.
VoNat and Meg Wah, will, therefore, be leveraging on the zeal ignited in the youngsters during the 2021 edition of Ecokids to mentor and guide them to restore degraded waterways and landscapes, while advocating for more climate actions via the mainstream and social media, and open letters, from June to December 2022. Specifically, the kids in both Buea and Bamenda will be guided to utilize the knowledge gained from refresher practical lessons on nursery development in the previous edition of Ecokids, to establish a nursery of 2000 indigenous fruit trees (1000 for the Kids in Buea and 1000 for those in Bamenda).
VoNat and Meg Wah will also mentor the young climate ambassadors to manage the nursery and transplant the trees to key degraded landscapes and waterways in Buea and Bamenda, while reporting about their actions and calling for greater climate actions via the social media, open letters and a series of radio talks. It is hoped that through this project, the children will gain practical knowledge and skills on how to fight against climate change as young climate ambassadors in Cameroon, and will spend the rest of their lives carrying out and propagating climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.
