Volunteer as an Environmental Journalist at VoN News

Voice of Nature (VoN) News is a Cameroon-based environment and conservation non-profit news platform dedicated to speaking for nature & the voiceless. There is a print version dubbed VoN Magazine. We raise awareness on environmental issues, stimulate debate and promote responsible natural resource management while grooming future environmental journalists. VoN News operates as part of the media & publication arm of  VoNat, Cameroon-based biodiversity conservation and sustainable development non-profit organization authorized by the Cameroon Ministry of Territorial Administration following registration No.1125/G.37/C84/VOL.I/SASC to operate as an apolitical, nondenominational, and non-profit organization.

Purpose of the Volunteering Position

We are currently seeking talented and enthusiastic individual(s) to volunteer with us as environmental journalists and contribute to raising awareness on environmental issues and promoting responsible natural resource management through investigative write-ups,  updates, and analysis on climate change, species & ecosystems, environment, and agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Gather news and information by interviewing people and attending events
  • Develop contacts and generate original story ideas
  • Arrange and conduct interviews and double-check information
  • Research background information for reports and articles.
  • Write clear and concise stories.
  • Review and edit reports and articles for publication using established styles and formats
  • Record detailed information, including personal observations and interviews, using cameras, cassette recorders, and personal notes.
  • Discuss assignments with other reporters, and  editor(s)
  • Produce short video reports about key environmental issues and events

Qualification

  • A Bachelor Degree in journalism and mass communication, media studies and any related specialization .
  • Passion and interest in climate change, species & ecosystems, environment, and agriculture
  • Good team spirit and communication skills
  • Ability to speak and write good English (being able  to also speak and write French is a plus)
  • Ability to work and interact with people of different backgrounds
