A Buea based non-profit organization, Clean Water and Sanitation Africa (CWASAF) is making efforts in ensuring that streets, taps/water springs and public areas in the City of Excellence are void of refuse. One of such moves was carried out, January 26, 2019, in collaboration with Hygiene and Sanitation Cameroon (HYSACAM), Empowerment Center for Young Entrepreneurs (ECYE), and Great Mind Development (GMD) at the Molyko Omni Sport Stadium, and the Check Point area as a whole.

Aimed at restoring the culture of hygiene and sanitation in Buea, CWASAF and its partner organisations were engaged in weeding, picking up papers and plastics and dumping in trash cans and a plastic collection cage stationed at Check Point by the South West Regional Delegation of Environment Protection of Nature, and Sustainable Development respectively. Road sides were also swept during this clean-up campaign.

Speaking to Voice of Nature News, Founder/Executive Director  of CWASAF, Sam Nloin Sukpa, situated the importance of the cleanup exercise. “Cleanliness is a product of the mindset. We make sure we talk to the people around to understand the importance of what we are doing. I belief that educating them on the use of trash cans, dirt segregation, and the effect of a dirty environment on human health will go a long way to reduce litter in the Buea Municipality. They also need to know that cleaning the community is not the sole responsibility of HYSACAM,” he expounded.

CWASAF is a community based organization aimed at providing water in rural/urban localities and innovative approach to curb the undesirable effects of climate change, biodiversity conservation and garbage recycling, while empowering youths to be outstanding and effective leaders. The organization has over the years been engaged in tree planting and sensitization on waste management, clean-up/sensitization campaigns, youth engagement in community development and nursery establishment in secondary schools amongst others.
